The expanse of Kiambu County was the space to host the team from Optiven Foundation on 12th July 2019. The event was a special meet up between beneficiaries of the Mobility to Smile Campaign at Karuhiti Village in Githunguri Kiambu County. This was during a courtesy call by the chairman of Optiven Foundation, Mr. George Wachiuri in partnership with DJ Covenant and Mr. James Mugo aka Ploti – a philanthropist.
Present at the event were Mr. Mburu and Mr. Macharia who are beneficiaries of the wheelchairs donated by Optiven Foundation on Rurumuka on 30th June 2019. The visit to the Githunguri home, was a precursor of the Rurumuka TV Show during which the public were invited to donate wheelchairs towards the campaign.
Wachiuri noted that the campaign was an initiative to facilitate mobility for those among us who are living with disability. Wachiuri shared the Optiven Foundation’s outreach under the mobility to bring smiles to Kisii County where two beneficiaries lives have been changed for the better.
He noted that one of the beneficiaries was living with disability having been born without her limbs while another, a minor was involved in a train crash that left her without legs. During the show, Wachiuri, had promised to visit the beneficiaries at their homes to find out their progress and also encourage them further.
And on 12th July, 2019 the team from Optiven Foundation together with #AskWachiuri Host, DJ Covenant made their way to Kiamumbi to meet up with Mr. Stanley Macharia. Macharia then accompanied the team to the heart of Githunguri, where Karuhiti village is located. The team was here to meet with Mr. Mburu, who is also a beneficiary and is currently living with cerebral palsy since birth.
The home was teemed with neighbours who welcomed the team with appreciation for the wheelchairs. Speaking in Karuhiti, Wachiuri advised that the interest of those less fortunate among us is the responsibility of all of us. He singled out the talent among the people living with disability noting that they have a role to play in the social and economic status of the society.
Wachiuri advised that the foundation which adheres to the Sustainable Development Goals, has been involved with empowerment of girls through engaging in a sanitary programme targeting children in challenging environments. Appreciating the team, Jane Njambi Njenga on behalf of the community at Karuhiti in Githunguri, she called for more to donate to the campaign in order to make more people smile.
Speaking at the event, Mr. James Mugo, a Sales Manager with Optiven Limited said, ‘the donation was part of my salary to make a difference and the need to partner with others to bring smiles to others through donation ’. Wachiuri took the time to encourage those in the corporate sector to invest in the less fortunate by giving of their resources because ‘life is supposed to be about brightening the lives of others.’
He encouraged the youth to make it a habit to visit their parents and take care of their needs to ensure they are taken care of as regards their needs. According to Wachiuri, a majority of the youth have chosen to indulge in imbibing and drugs without prioritizing their responsibility to their parents.
The Optiven Foundation has also partnered with the County Government of Kajiado to better the environment including a clean up that was done in Kimalat and Ngatataek respectively. As regards the Mobility that Brings Smiles, Wachiuri advised that the campaign had received a number of donors many of whom had delivered their donations to the foundation.
Wachiuri lauded the donors including the associates from Optiven Group Ms. Florence Ng’ethe and Mr. James Mugo – both who donated wheelchairs to the foundation. He added that the foundation, through it’s partners support, would donate the wheelchairs received to beneficiaries in Othaya 31st July 2019 before heading to Mukurweini and Machakos counties.
The campaign has so far received 18 chairs and the deficit will only be met with proper accountability guaranteed from the foundation.
