As the world marks the International Day of Police Cooperation today, Optiven Foundation joins the global call for stronger partnerships that protect vulnerable communities, promote trust and contribute to safer and more resilient societies.

The 2026 United Nations theme, “Protecting Against Vulnerability – Building Trust and Legitimacy in Policing,” highlights the importance of protecting people who are most at risk while strengthening confidence between communities and law-enforcement institutions. The United Nations emphasizes that effective policing requires cooperation, accountability, fairness, respect for human rights and meaningful engagement with communities.

Dr. George Wachiuri, the Optiven Foundation Chairman says, “for Optiven Foundation, this message strongly resonates with the belief that sustainable community development goes beyond infrastructure and economic empowerment. A thriving community must also be safe, peaceful, inclusive and built on trust.”

Anne Nyaga, Cordinator at the Optiven Foundation adds “through its humanitarian and community-focused initiatives, Optiven Foundation recognizes the valuable role played by police officers and other security stakeholders in protecting communities, responding to emergencies, preventing crime and supporting vulnerable people. ”

The Optiven Foundation team at a previous visit to Kasolongo Police Station in Kithangaini, Machakos County where they engaged in sustainability activities under the GoGreen Initiative in collaboration with the Rotary Club.

Corporate Affairs and Sustainability Manager at Optiven Limited, Cathrine Khasoa says, “the Foundation believes that no single institution can address today’s social challenges alone. Strong collaboration between government agencies, law enforcement, businesses, civil society, community organizations and citizens is essential. Such collaboration can help create communities where children can grow safely, young people can pursue productive opportunities, families can thrive and residents feel confident that their concerns are heard.”

International Day of Police Cooperation reminds us that security is a shared responsibility. Police officers provide an essential public service, but safer communities also depend on responsible citizens, ethical leadership, strong institutions and organizations willing to invest in social wellbeing.
